The Central Adoption Commission (Publiczny Osrodek Adopcynjo-Opiekunczy) is the government office responsible for adoption of Polish children whether domestic or international. They maintain a registry of all children residing in orphanages that are available for adoption.

The Polish authorities are fairly flexible regarding the requirements for the adoptive parents. They accept married or single (women). They do have a rule that one parent can be no older than 40 years plus the child's age.

The Children
range in age There is no choice limitation other than availability. Generally this program is better for those seeking older children, sibling groups or are open to children with special needs. You will be sent a referral packet containing information on your child. The Polish authorities will supply you with ample medical information to make your decision. Additional medical exams can be arranged. Once you decide to accept the referral, the adoption process begins.

The Process
Both parents are required to fly to Poland to meet the child. Polish law requires that both adoptive parents must be present for at least part of the court procedure, which generally involves two hearings. Once the final hearing has been held, and the adoption is approved, a 21-day waiting period is required for finalization.

Total time in Poland averages 4-6 weeks for the adoption process. During this time, one parent may opt to return home. Many families decide to make two trips for the whole adoption. The time from accepting a referral to finalization of the adoption averages three months.
